Container Projects

Each year the Detroit Annual Conference and Midland First United Methodist Church alternates aid packages between Liberia and Haiti. This project provides badly needed personal item for families and school children in these countries.

Four categories of kits are assembled for shipment including school kits, layette kits, health kits, and sewing kits.  Each kit is intended to contain specific items that have been demonstrated to be of invaluable assistance to families in these areas of tremendous economic need.

Please contact the church office, 989-835-6797, or for more information on these projects.

Crop Walk /Church World Service

Each fall First UMC supports Church World Service in raising funds for the hungry.  Walkers take pledges and participate in a community walk to bring awareness of the hunger issues in our world and community.  Money raised is divided 75% for a various counties based on current needs and 25% states in Midland to be used by the community food banks.  This year’s Crop Walk is Sunday, October 5th.  If you are interested in walking or pledging a walker, please call the call the church office.

A second opportunity to help with hunger issues is our Tools for Hope and Blanket Sunday.  This special offering in late winter provides funding to purchase blankets for $5 or other tools (shovels, rakes, hoes, etc) to provide resources for people in developing countries.   It not only provides food, but offers the tools needed to produce food and provide shelter.

UMCOR

HOPE IS PART OF OUR RELIGION

United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is the global humanitarian aid organization of The United Methodist Church.  We work in 80 countries worldwide, including the United States.  Our mission is to alleviate human suffering with open minds and hearts to all people.  Suffering that is caused by war, conflict, or natural disaster.

In times of acute crisis we partner with people to rebuild their livelihoods, health, and homes.  We mobilize aid to stricken areas.  We provide emergency supplies, fresh water, and temporary shelter.  And then we stay as long as it takes to implement long-term recovery and rehabilitation.

UMCOR is a member of Action by Churches Together, Church World Service, and Interchurch Medical Assistance.  These global ecumenical alliances share the same mission to restore well-being to children, women, and men.  UMCOR embodies the life-saving humanitarian presence of the people of The United Methodist Church.

100% of our financial gifts go to these needs, as administrative costs are provided for from other funds.  Thanks for all your help when you give to UMCOR through our church.
